SAI General / SAI : my tools , brushes and PDF tutorial
« on: June 28, 2009, 04:07:57 PM »
Have a nice day!
Hello everybody!
Long time no posting anything with this fantastic program, so these days I have reviewed all my notes from an old tutorial attempt. It's in English since I understand that most users of SAI use this language.
SAI is not free but for a more than a reasonable price ,we have very, very interesting options of painting. It is really one of my favorites in terms of colors blending and the effect of the brush on the canvas.
Many people were asking me, and although there is little information on the internet in English or Spanish (most are in Japanese) this is my contribution so that more people can enjoy this program. Here you have it. The manual explaining how to create brushes, my own tools, and a PDF explaining the whole process and a gallery of the tools.

Well, it doesn´t matter but if there is a topic for the "Bugs" we must reply there this type of questions imho.

i´m working hard to take this image to the Pro level and present or post in CGtalk so any advices are welcome ok? And, yes figue, iuse the "standard" textures and other also not so "standar" is very easy rip from photos to get new textures. Which type of brushes do you use? i see a lot on your screencaptures. Do you create al this custom tools? maybe i must open a new thread about that.

Yes i only use 2 layers. is ok for me because i use Sai to paint in a real way like oilpaints or similar. but i have never got this problem. i´m going to study that.

Thanks for the replies.
Lozeta: Mongul has a Pure Yellow skin
. And you are allright. The boxes are horrible cos they are in a WIP process and i have to refine them. The perspective is Wrong also and i didn´t notice this .so thanks a lot. Soometimes happen that you are painting for hours and finally you see nothing at all. XDD
I usually work at DIN-A 4. resolution but in 2480x3508px .at 300dpi. is great to print without losing quality. This is huge but ,who cares for the space disk

Well, i make my own tools(a huge bunch depending the picture) because i´m more confortable with them. i think you can make tools in the trial version. just click RMB in the tool section and a menu appears showing what kind of tool you want to create ok? choose one and you got it. Then you double click in the new tool and other menu appears asking for a name and other things. So put a name just like "awesometoolwhichmakeamazingmangagirls"
well maybe not so long just a simple word goes better ;and you got it, A custom tool with his unique name and a hotkey if you want it too. Easy? sure so c´mon and customize SAI and enjoy. I hope i helped you.
regards

like this picture. but it´s a finished picture? it seems to me like a WIP because colours are pretty flat and contours are not defined too much. imho

So here we are guys.
Long time ago no posting here.
So i decided to show what i´m doing right know with SAI. it is Mongul the Superman´s enemy but in a realistic style (i think) I tried to imitate the Rembrandt style just for fun to see how it looks like. Just an experiment but i,m very happy with the results.

I used in this picture lot of custom brushes to make textured look so here we go.

and a closeup to see the textures.

hope you like it
crits and comments are very apreciated

Thanks to all.
I use several layers to ink. the bottom layer is the pencil .you know. The second layer is drawing layer. i use my ink tool wich is a custom
pen tool that it cames with SAI. and then i use a vector layer for objects and poligonal stuff.
i used another vector layer for curves that are dificult to draw. i try 3 or 4 times drawing manually .and if doesn,t work i draw in a vector layer because gives me more control on the stroke. idraw a normal curve with the curve tool and then i control or change the pressure of several "control dots". it is a faster and a very efecctive way to do things like that.
this is an example. The original is from Jscott campbell.

SAI does not mean MANGA. of course. but it´s normal, that japanese people use more SAI than European people for example. I´m came from Spain. and it´s amazing most of people don´t know what is SAI. "sai ...i don´t know, any type of weapon?" XDD
SAI covers all paintting styles .you only have to tweak several brushes.and is very easy to do that.
