General Discussion / Re: new to sai paint tool
« on: January 24, 2016, 08:07:46 PM »
Before I got my tablet I did my art with a mouse using the vector tools in Sai.  I simply created a pen tool layer and placed lines down over my sketch.  I then used the node edit feature to adjust the linework to how I want it.  It takes longer than freehanding it but works well with just a mouse.  See the attached image for an example done in Sai with a mouse.

SAI 2 / Re: New build for SAI 2.0 (as of 12/31/2014)

Since it is still in Beta some features and brushes are missing but what's there is exciting.  Such as the text, vector shapes and perspective rulers.  Can't wait to see the final version.

A few things: the source code is included with the Windows downloads in a Zipped file.  This latest version has a feature that lets you open MikuMikuDance 3D models and accessories to use as a reference image.  Much like the 3D materials in Clip Studio Paint.  Supposedly you can save files in PSD, PNG and Jpeg (probably with a script macro).

So I tried the latest version.  The paint and draw features do work.  I still can't get the text tool to work.  When I tried to run the 3D model version (Mikado.exe) the program crashes after running.  Conclusion: still needs work to be stable.

SAI General / Re: Problem with shadows and shading

I find that my hobby of photography helps me to understand the use of light and shadow in making images.  First think where your light sources are and how they illuminate your image.  Also the color of your light sources affect the color of your shadows.

You can re-size the various parts of the menus.  See that small horizontal line under the tool menu.  Hover your cursor over it and turns into a double arrow.  Click on it and drag down to make the tool menu area bigger.

SAI General / Re: SAI - Smooth Lines
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:20:42 PM »
What resolution are you drawing at?  Usually a resolution of 400 to 600 dpi is best.  When you reduce the final image is makes the shaky lines smoother.

SAI 2 / Re: Paint Tool SAI 2.0 available for download

Well it is nice to see them moving forward with SAI.  The text addition is nice though it is on a raster layer.  And being a demo it's missing a lot of features.  The straight line and curve drawing tools or selection rulers look interesting but will they be really useful?

SAI General / Re: Paint tool sai suggestions

I have read on another forum (don't know if it's true) the head programmer on SAI left to work for CelSys and developed Clip Studio Paint.  And Clip Studio Paint was ported to English As Manga Studio 5.

There's a mention in the blog about Unbuntu.  Maybe there is a version other than Windows.  I do see it has an autosave function.

Seems to have a lot in common with SAI.  Paint and vector layers, similar vector editing tools, layers and brushes.  I couldn't get the text tool to work, it's a bit slow and it tends to crash a lot.  Also it seems to only save in its native file format.  If it were more stable, the text tool worked and saved in PNG or PSD files it could be a serious contender.

SAI General / Re: Intuos + SAI: Hotkey Recommendations

On my Intuous 3 I use one key for the Cancel command, another for Undo, another to clear selections, and another for Enter.  I know I can use the buttons on the pen but I'm not comfortable doing that.  The touch strips I use for zooming in and out.

General Discussion / Comicado Lite -FREE-
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:56:16 PM »
Comicado, a new graphic program for making art and comics is now at version 1.00.  What's new is a free version called Comicado Lite.  The Lite version does not have perspective tools, rulers and mirror, custom brushes, presets and templates, high resolution ink layers or layered PSD image export.  It does have everything else to make art and comics with features very similar to Paint Tool SAI but with vector shapes and text capabilities.  And the Lite version is FREE.  So go to the website, download the Lite version and try it out.  There is a forum with tips on using it and the developer is very helpful if you ask him.  The full version with all the features listed above is available for 19.90 Euros or 25.83 dollars.

Find it here >>> http://jugilus.com/comicado/comicado_main.php

Just as an update Comicado is up to version 0.98 and new features include line constraints for ruler angle and perspective lines.  High res layers which work in double resolution.  Improved PSD exporter to handle high res images.  Opacity parameter added to bucket tool.  Improved memory, speed and stability.  Short video about Comicado on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk9NSPGrS4k&feature=youtu.be

A merging of SAI, Clip Studio and openCanvas?  That would be something.

The only trial limitation is that you can't reload or open the files you have saved.  You can save as a PSD to open in another program.  I even opened a PSD file in SAI and it kept all the layers separate.  Though it turned the splines into rasters.  I do like the pose and perspective features.  I tried the inking tools with a tablet and it is nice.  And at around $25 it is cheaper than SAI.
